Break Free

Before going to Break Free, I didn’t really prepare my heart to be out of my comfort zone for several hours at a time. On the first day I felt completely out of my element because we had to go into the boys’ dorm to use the bathroom. The paint we used on the wood panels was tar-based and burns your skin upon contact. While painting on the first day, I was standing behind Izaan. When she got up she accidentally kicked my paint container towards me and the paint spilled all over my chest. Thankfully Tarryn and a couple of girls helped to clean me up in the bathroom.

I really wasn’t upset with Izaan or about the situation and I tried not to lose my joy. However, I felt uncomfortable for the rest of the day. The tar made my skin itch and my tar-covered shirt kept rubbing against my color bone. By the end of the day, my neck was swollen and I was in an extreme amount of pain. On top of all of that, I knew I would have to study in the car on the way back to write my bible school exam as soon as we arrived in Witbank. It was tough on my flesh and I was getting irritated. I asked myself the question: “How am I going to go on a 27-day missions trip into Africa, if I can’t even handle one day in Cullinan”?I was almost in tears when I asked Bernice to rub some vaseline on my neck. She spoke words of life to me and said that there will be no scarring or irritation in Jesus’ Name. I immediately felt the peace of God come over me. Glory to Jesus.

On the second day I already knew what to expect and by the help of the Holy Spirit, I was determined to keep my joy no matter what. I really did enjoy serving others and sowing seed into future buildings for the ministry. I also had some awesome holy conversations with Tarryn while we were painting and  carrying wood. There were also many other opportunities to fellowship. At the end of the day, I would say it was a successful outreach.
